The
term FLiteracy! was coined in 2005 by FLI Founder Elouen Soviac to
refer to the organization's foreign language literacy program that
encompasses a variety of events and activities.
The FLiteracy! program fulfills its
goals in several different ways. Throughout the academic year, the FLI hosts
a number of language classes that are not traditionally offered on most
university campuses. The classes are taught in an informal setting by native
speakers to any one interested. Furthermore, FLI language instruction is
free!
The FLI Language Fairs based on a language economy, are held
regularly in the CSU main lobby booths. Students are exposed to a wide
variety of lesser taught languages. As a result of being actively engaged in
foreign language activities and games, students gain easy and fun access to
languages from Amharic to Yoruba. For example, in a matter of minutes,
students experience how to dial their phone numbers in Arabic, Chinese,
Japanese or Russian! Order food in Swahili or Somali! Practice Chinese
calligraphy! Play foreign language memory games! For their participation,
students earn FLI dollars which they in turn can redeem for prizes. FLI
dollars depict the faces of FLI members as well as an image of their
favorite international monument.
Starting in the fall of 2006, the FLiteracy! program will host a
foreign script contest to encourage the learning of Amharic and Tibetan
alphabets. Winners in each category will be awarded with one of two FLI
Founder's Scholarships.
Starting in the spring of 2007, the FLiteracy! program will
administer FLI comprehensive tests in six languages. Winners in each
category will be awarded with one of six FLI Founder's Scholarships.
The FLiteracy! reading series, currently in the making, aims to
capture the fundamentals of most languages to create uniform lesson plans
with highly accessible communicative and interactive content for all
language classes. Once the series is well established, it is hoped that the
FLI can sponsor reading activities for all students interested in broadening
their linguistic notions.
Starting in the fall of 2006, FLiteracy! will add a new dimension
to the FLI by providing pre-recorded language lessons via FLivision!
Cooperation with other universities will make a greater variety of
languages available to students on campus throughout the day.
FLI Hotspots! are places where students gather for a leisurely
exchange of cultures and languages. Times, locations and languages will be
posted on the FLI Website . FLI Hotspots! will be indicated by FLI
banners.
FLI Short Features.
Students are invited to participate in the making of short features using
languages they don't know. A collection of these will be shown in Osterman
Theater at the end of each semester.
The FLI mascot, the FLion! will be present at all these activities
and events in order to entertain everyone and encourage learners while
promoting the spirit of FLiteracy!
